Swiss Orienteering: Day#2

Day#2 of the Swiss Orienteering Week was a little lower on the mountain slopes and actually had some forest. It was a lot of climbing (7% climb) and quite rugged but another day of great views. When you are racing on these steep slopes and at altitude it means there is inevitably going to be some walking. The walking is a lot easier to take when the views are so awesome. The photo above is after Emma found out that she beat Mike in the finish line sprint for the second day in a row. Emma was 35 seconds - Mike hobbled to the finish in 40.

The best part of the day was sitting and chatting to our friends from Canada and the US. There are 35 Canadians registered in this race and here are a number of us at the finish line (a beautiful alpine meadow). Several of the Canadian WOC team members are here as well as the JWOC team as well.
In the evening you can visit the event centre and watch movies of the day's racing in the bars or attend to awards ceremony. The photo below shows Sharon Crawford and Peter Gagarin winning Day#2 (with the mountains as a back drop).
Each stage (except Day#5) requires us to take a gondola, cable car or mountain train to the start of the race. Days#1 and #2 were up the Gornergrat railway (shown below). Days #3, 4, and 6 are on gondolas and cable cars. Should be exciting.
